Is wellness a goal or journey?
Merriam Webster says wellness is “a state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal”. Often we only consider physical health when deciding whether or not someone is “well.” Eating nutritious and exercising are necessary for a healthy lifestyle, but these make up a very small part of total wellness.
Consider The Wellness Wheel…Wellness has several components, and it is often depicted as a wheel with seven spokes. They are physical, social, environmental, financial, spiritual, emotional and intellectual. If one or more of these spokes are neglected, the “wheel” will be off-balance. Wellness happens when there is a degree of balance among these seven areas.
Miss B thinks that “Optimal wellness” is based on our needs, experiences, and circumstances at the time. Life’s current challenges and joys cause different spokes of our wellness to fall out of balance and some may need more attention than other areas.
